Biography
Roberto Martínez Montoliu (born 13 July 1973) is a Spanish professional football manager and former player. He was most recently the manager of the Portuguese national team.
Martínez played as a defensive midfielder and began his senior career with Real Zaragoza in 1993, where he won the Copa del Rey in his debut season, before signing with his hometown club Balaguer in 1994. One year later, Martínez joined Wigan Athletic, where he won the Third Division in 1997 and the Football League Trophy in 1999, and formed part of the Three Amigos, a Spanish first-team trio of players alongside Jesús Seba and Isidro Díaz. Martínez then briefly played for Motherwell and Walsall before signing with Swansea City in 2003, where he won the Football League Trophy in 2006. He retired after playing one season with Chester City in 2007, aged 34.
Martínez began his managerial career at Swansea City in 2007 and won League One in 2008. He departed in 2009 to coach Wigan Athletic, winning their first ever FA Cup in 2013. He joined Everton that year but was fired in 2016. He joined Belgium soon after and led them to third place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, their best-ever World Cup finish, and reached first in FIFA World Rankings between 2018 and 2022, but he resigned after failing to progress from the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He became Portugal head coach in 2023 and won the UEFA Nations League in 2025, but resigned after losing in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
